Barnsley Hospice gets excellent feedback
14 January 2013
A survey has shown that 99 per cent of people who expressed an opinion think Barnsley Hospice gives a very good or excellent service.
The survey of more than 700 people showed that 61 per cent thought services were ”excellent”, 19 per cent thought they “very good”, one per cent said “satisfactory”, and the remaining 19 per cent ticked “don’t know”.
Hospice chief executive Ian Carey said: “This shows that people who come into contact with us are happy with the service they receive.
“However, we are not complacent and always strive to do our very best for the people of Barnsley and we are always looking at ways of improving what we offer.”
Ian said he was concerned that five per cent of people surveyed had not heard of Barnsley Hospice before and more than one in five didn’t know that it was free to patients.
“We still have some way to go raise awareness among people and it distresses me to think there are some people out there who may not know we are here when they really need us.”
The hospice, at Gawber, has ten beds for inpatient care and provides day care at the Limes Support and Therapy Centre every day, as well as a wide range of other services for patients and their families.
Care is free for anyone in Barnsley with a life-limiting condition, not just for cancer patients.
The hospice has to raise £2 million in addition to its £1.6m NHS grant to stay open. It relies heavily on donations and sales at its nine charity shops around the borough, as well as the work of volunteers.
The survey was carried out by distributing questionnaires through Barnsley Hospice shops and at the hospice, doing face to face interviews, mailing to recipients of the hospice newsletter and the use of social media. A total of 736 responses were received.
