Doncaster ice skating star to champion creativity in classroom
24 September 2014
A former professional ice skater with a talent for teaching has joined Cornerstones Education Ltd.
Hayley Beecher learned to skate at Doncaster Dome leisure complex when it first opened in 1989 and regularly competed in British Figure Skating Championships all over the UK between the ages of 8 and 18.
She has now joined Cornerstones’ growing team of schools consultants and will travel the country introducing teachers to the company’s creative curriculum materials.
Goldthorpe-based Cornerstones already supplies more than a thousand primary schools across England and Wales, including 75 primary schools in South Yorkshire.
Its mission is to spread a creative learning philosophy to more schools and help teachers design and deliver high-quality lessons which are engaging and enable children to develop skills and knowledge; think for themselves, innovate and express themselves.
Hayley said: “I am passionate about creativity in all its forms and genuinely believe it has a positive impact on teaching and learning in all subject areas.
“I love my new job because the Cornerstones’ creative curriculum is already helping teachers in hundreds of schools to deliver interesting and inspiring lessons – I’ve now got the opportunity to introduce and explain it to more.
“School should be a good experience for everyone and not something any of us look back on with a shudder.”
Hayley still enjoys skating and has given lessons to children and adults at Doncaster Dome ice rink since she was 15-years-old. She’ll continue to do this one night a week alongside her Cornerstones work.
Hayley is a graduate of Bretton Hall College and has worked over ten years’ in arts development with Doncaster Community Arts (DARTS). She has managed community-based projects such as the ‘Right Up Our Street’ cultural initiative and designed and delivered bespoke training courses, focusing on creative learning.
Hayley has also taught dance and drama in dozens of Doncaster schools and was recently involved in a Doncaster dance music video project funded by Arts Council England and involving people of all ages and abilities.
Schools director at Cornerstones Graham Bell said: “We are expanding rapidly as more schools buy into Cornerstones’ creative learning philosophy, so it’s great to have Hayley on board championing our products and showing teachers how to use them in the classroom.
“Hayley’s enthusiasm and energy is already proving infectious and she is developing excellent relationships with heads and teachers up and down the country.”
Cornerstones Education was established in 2010 by a team of three directors and now employs 32 people.
The South Yorkshire company produces a creative curriculum package which provides comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum, plus a growing range of additional teaching and learning resources that focus on reading and scientific investigation.
Cornerstones has also just launched an innovative multi-media online Hub to provide teachers with easy access to lesson-planning tools and inspiring ready-made teaching resources, which accompany its curriculum projects.
Cornerstones headquarters is in the Dearne Valley on Fields End Business Park, Goldthorpe.
