New Barnsley x-ray business offers specialist inspection services to industry

20 October 2014

A new specialist company offering X-ray inspection services to food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies has opened for business in Barnsley.

Euroscan X-ray Ltd aims to supply its state-of-the-art quality control services to manufactures and producers of consumable goods across the north of England and the north midlands.

Euroscan is a subsidiary of Cheyney Design and Development Ltd, a leading international player in the design, development and manufacture of x-ray technology.

The company has moved into new 7,000 square foot premises at Shortwood Business Park, near Hoyland, and commissioned £60,000-worth of bespoke x-ray equipment for its first product inspection line.

This precision technology can detect glass, wood, metal and other foreign bodies down to tenths of a millimetre in size, which may have got into a product such as a jar of jam, toothpaste, cough medicine or tinned peaches.

It can help any company, where a batch of products has been exposed to a risk of contamination, by identifying any products which have been affected and giving the ‘all clear’ for others.

Operations Manager Perry Alderson, who is overseeing the Barnsley venture, said: “Quality standards are extremely high in the production of food and other consumable goods these days and if companies can’t be 100 per cent sure of the absolute integrity of a large batch of product, it is often shipped off in bulk to landfill or incineration.

“This is obviously not good for the environment or the company’s bottom line as it loses money in sales and has to pay waste disposal levies too. Our aim is to offer a cost-effective alternative. Good products go back to market and any products identified as compromised are removed.”

Euroscan is thought to be the only company offering expert x-ray inspection and detection services in the north of England.
Euroscan’s move into Barnsley has been supported by Enterprising Barnsley, a European-funded programme delivered by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Perry said: “The welcome we have received in Barnsley has been fantastic.

“We chose Barnsley as a base because half the cost to our customers is in the logistics of getting their products to us and back again. Barnsley has excellent road links with the M1, M62 and A1, so we are within easy reach of many potential customers.

“Our brand new property at Shortwood Business Park also ticked all the boxes as it is essential we have exceptionally clean premises in our line of work.

“And Enterprising Barnsley has given us valuable support to establish our business here, in particular with our marketing and sales strategy to make connections and attract clients.”

Euroscan benefits from business rate relief in its new location within the Sheffield City Region Enterprise Zone and Enterprising Barnsley has also helped the company secure a grant from the Business Growth Programme, managed by Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.

Euroscan X-ray Ltd is a subsidiary company of Cambridge-based Cheyney Design and Development Ltd, a £1.5 million company and world leader in the development of radiographic equipment. It is also part of the Sapphire Group which sells x-ray technology into businesses across the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Euroscan has been modelled on an existing Cheyney-owned business called France Scan SA, a thriving enterprise based near Lyon, France.

Euroscan plans to recruit a workforce of up to seven people as work comes into the business.

Its strategy for growth involves the development of a second inspection line within two years and future investment in a mobile inspection unit so that Euroscan will be able to go into customer’s premises to scrutinise fresh, frozen or pharmaceutical products which are not allowed to leave the site of manufacture.

Enterprising Barnsley business development manager Shaun Higginbottom said: “Euroscan opens its doors for business this month and we are delighted to support this completely new venture for our region. We look forward to seeing many manufacturing and production companies making use of its unique quality control service.”

Enterprising Barnsley is supported financially by the European Union and has attracted £2,259,511 investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development, through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.
