New meeting place offers teachers room to think

28 October 2013

South Yorkshire primary school teachers are being invited to get out of the classroom and try a new suite of rooms for meetings, training sessions and strategic planning events.

The ‘Cornerstones Learning Centre’ was opened by Professor Mick Waters, one of the country’s best-known champions of quality and innovation in education.

Developed by Cornerstones Education Ltd at its Barnsley headquarters, the centre includes a reception space, a board room with seating for eight and a training room with capacity for 35 delegates. It is now available to hire.

Mick Waters, Professor of Education at Wolverhampton University and a former director at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) officially opened the new meeting rooms at an ‘afternoon tea’ event, attended by staff and governors from South Yorkshire schools, suppliers and partners of Cornerstones.

Cornerstones’ Schools Director Graham Bell said: “It is essential for head teachers, governors, senior leadership teams and wider school cluster groups to sit down and invest time in planning, training and development.

“Cornerstones is now offering an option for members of the education sector to get together and hold effective meetings and training sessions in a professional, comfortable space, away from the pressure of the school environment.”

The Cornerstones Learning Centre is located near Goldthorpe in the Barnsley borough nine miles from junction 37 of the M1 and four miles from junction 37 of the A1. It is fully accessible on the ground floor and has plenty of free parking. A full catering service is available.

Graham added: “Many of us at Cornerstones are former teachers and we know that primary schools can be notoriously short of meeting space. When we doubled the size of our business premises to create this new 1,300 square feet space for our own meetings and training courses, we were determined to open up the resource to teachers across the region.

“We really hope schools will find it a good place to come together to hold effective training and development sessions.”

Cornerstones are a team of educational specialists who produce comprehensive creative curriculum packages and other materials designed to help teachers plan and prepare engaging lessons which meet every requirement of the National Curriculum for England and Wales.

The National Curriculum has been overhauled for September 2014 and Cornerstones has entirely up-dated and extended its teaching and learning resources to ensure they meet – and exceed - its new demands. These new curriculum resources were launched at the event too.

Cornerstones will be announcing its own training and development programme to be delivered in the learning centre from January. The training courses will focus on helping schools get to grips with the new national curriculum.
