New post for Ruth builds on career in business and education
4 August 2014
A former teacher who ran her own business for 14 years has been recruited by Barnsley-based creative curriculum suppliers, Cornerstones Education.
Ruth Linden has been appointed to a newly-created post. She becomes the sixth member of the company’s growing team of school consultants who travel the country liaising with primary schools about Cornerstones’ teaching and learning materials.
Ruth’s new job builds on a career which combines experience in both education and business.
She trained as a teacher and ran a pre-school setting before setting up the Park Language Centre in Sheffield, in 1998 which she ran for 14 years. Children and adults were taught 12 languages, including English as a foreign language, at the independent learning centre.
Ruth then worked as a business adviser, with her clients coming from diverse sectors including engineering, distribution and education. She spent a couple of years working with Business Link Yorkshire in this capacity.
Ruth said: “I have a passion for both business and learning and believe it is so important for children to develop key skills for life and work during their education.
“What I love about the Cornerstones curriculum is the way it develops children as autonomous learners right from primary school age; giving them the confidence to think for themselves, use their imagination, innovate and ask questions.
“I've been very impressed with the professionalism of the dynamic team at Cornerstones too. They are totally committed to providing superior quality materials to primary school teachers. One of Cornerstones’ aims is to save teachers time and one teacher recently told me she felt our materials had helped give her her life back."
Schools director at Cornerstone Graham Bell said: “Ruth has brought a wealth of experience, insight and enthusiasm to the team and it is great to have her on board.
“We are expanding rapidly as more schools buy into Cornerstones’ creative learning philosophy and so needed to add to our team of consultants who build and sustain relationships with primary schools across the country.”
Cornerstones Education, based in Goldthorpe, Barnsley, was established in 2010 by a team of three directors each with 20 years’ experience in the teaching profession behind them. Graham, Melanie Moore and Simon Hickton now employ 31 people and the company has a growing customer-base of more than a thousand schools across England and Wales.
The company produces a creative curriculum package of 70 imaginative learning projects which provide comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum, plus additional teaching and learning resources that focus on reading and scientific investigation.
Cornerstones has also just launched an innovative multi-media online hub to provide teachers with easily accessible lesson-planning tools and ready-made and inspiring teaching resources which accompany its curriculum projects.
Last year, the firm doubled its office space by taking on a further 1,300 square feet at its headquarters on Fields End Business Park, Goldthorpe, Barnsley.
