New Sheffield arts and crafts gallery to be opened by Ian McMillan

27 June 2014

A new Sheffield gallery selling the work of local artists and makers will be officially opened by celebrated South Yorkshire poet Ian McMillan next month.

All Good Stuff in Butcher Works is the first retail outlet to be opened by a new artist-led collaborative enterprise which aims to promote and sell the work of Sheffield artists, makers and designers.

The gallery exhibits a wide range of hand-crafted goods made by over 40 established and emerging artists and artisans working in Sheffield and the surrounding area.

The All Good Stuff community interest company behind the project was set up seven months ago to develop commercial opportunities for local arts and crafts people to sell their work and raise their profile within the city.

All Good Stuff director Anne Phipps said: “There are so many talented local artists and artisans who produce high quality, beautiful things and we know many people love to support local businesses and buy locally hand-made and original work.
“Providing a city centre gallery-shop run on a co-operative basis is a way of bringing everything together.”

Anne set up All Good Stuff with her fellow directors Sharon Walker and Andrew Pollard. As a not-for-profit business, all income from sales goes direct to the artists and makers with a small proportion invested back in the company to support its sustainability, development and growth.

All Good Stuff’s shop, which is based next to Fusion Café in Butcher Works, opened for business a few weeks ago and has already attracted plenty of sales.

Anne said: “Everyone who has come into the shop so far is so happy to find us - they say things like 'this is just what Sheffield needs' and 'this is a hidden gem'. We're not trying to hide though, we want everyone to know about us and come and find us.”

Butcher Works on Arundel Street is part of Freeman College and some of the students' work is being sold on the All Good Stuff shelves too.

All Good Stuff’s business strategy includes plans to introduce a programme of craft workshops for all abilities plus solo exhibitions and events. The shop is staffed by the artists themselves but it is hoped that the project will also create opportunities for work experience, apprenticeships and employment in the future.

The ambition is to open a second shop elsewhere in the city following the same model.

Anne said: “Our first shop is beautiful and we love it but there are many people out there whose work we'd love to accommodate and we don’t have the space - so we will be on the look-out for a second and maybe even a third shop when we have time to draw breath!”

Acclaimed poet, performer and broadcaster Ian McMillan will cut the ribbon at a celebration to mark the opening of All Good Stuff on Thursday July 17th at 6pm – 8.30pm.

Anne said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Ian McMillan agreed to open our gallery and are extremely grateful for his support for our creative venture.”

All Good Stuff is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 5pm, tel: 0114 252 5985.
