Solicitors offer free service to help Barnsley Hospice

22 January 2013

Solicitors have teamed up with Barnsley Hospice to offer a free will-making service.

Four local firms will waive their fee in February to write simple wills or alter existing ones in exchange for a donation to the hospice.

It costs £9,000 a day to run the hospice at Gawber, with care free for anyone in Barnsley with a life-limiting condition.

The hospice has to raise £2 million in addition to its £1.6m NHS grant to stay open. Last year nearly £400,000 was left in wills; a big increase on the average of previous years of about £50,000.

Hospice fundraiser Helen MacIntosh said: “If you take up the offer of the will-making service there is no obligation to remember Barnsley Hospice in your will, but leaving a legacy, whether large or small, will help secure the long-term future for our patients and carers.

“Our services are free to people who need them, but not free to provide. We therefore rely on the generosity of the local community to help us raise much-needed funds.”

The four Barnsley solicitors firms that are offering the service for free are Howells, Bury & Walkers, Elmhirst Parker and MKB Solicitors.

Steve Dawson, of MKB Solicitors, said: “Making a will is a perfect opportunity for you to remember the family, friends and charities you care about, and will ensure that your affairs are easier to deal with by those you leave behind.”

The fee is being waived for simple wills in exchange for a suggested minimum £50 donation to the hospice. More complex wills may incur a charge.

The offer is part of the hospice’s Make a Will Month that will run throughout February. For more information go to www.barnsleyhospice.org

The hospice has ten beds for inpatient care and provides day care at the Limes Support and Therapy Centre every day, as well as a wide range of other services for patients and their carers.
In addition to legacies, the hospice receives income from other donations, fund-raising and sales at its nine charity shops around the borough. It also relies on the work of hundreds of volunteers.
