Surveyors looking to the future with new apprentices
19 May 2014
A South Yorkshire company is to become the first in the country to offer apprenticeships in 3D surveying. 1st Horizon, which is based near Penistone, wants to recruit up to ten apprentices to help cope with increasing demand for its services.
The company, which was set up in 2006, specialises in 3-dimensional laser scanning of buildings and surveying for underground pipes and cables. They can survey anything from sewage works and reservoirs to supermarkets and schools.
1st Horizon was one of the first in the UK to invest in the 3D scanners and has recently invested £500,000 in new 3D equipment. Most clients are in the UK, but the company has also worked on projects in Russia, Germany and Romania. It also helped Channel 4’s Time Team look for an Iron Age fort using a 3D scanner.
By teaming up with Barnsley College the company is now able to offer the two-year apprenticeship to young people aged 16 to 18. The apprentices will be employed full-time by 1st Horizon and undertake training which will be run in-house and at the college.
Jim Garside, 1st Horizon’s managing director, said: “We are working with the college to design the training from scratch as it really is the first time something like this has been done. It will be pretty technical, but we are talking about an industry that is going through massive growth.
“We are seeing an increase in demand for our services and these apprentices will help increase the capacity of our teams working at different sites throughout the country.
“These recruits are the future of the company and we hope in two years’ time they will be able to take on senior roles.”
Applicants must have a minimum of five good GCSEs and be IT literate. The training will be a mix of in-house, block release and online learning.
Tim Taylor, programme manager for construction at Barnsley College, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to be working at a cutting edge company in this vocational area. The industry is rapidly changing with the advent of new technology and it is exciting for Barnsley College to be working in partnership with such a new venture.”
