Thousands expected to flock to South Yorkshire music festival
16 July 2012
More than ten thousand music fans, young and old, are expected to descend on South Yorkshire next month to attend a music festival which has been revived after an eight year break.
The Shindig Festival will be held at Silverwood, Silkstone, near Barnsley from Friday August 10 – Sunday August 12. The line-up includes big name rock bands Athlete and The Rifles, as well as acoustic act Simon and Oscar from Ocean Colour Scene - unplugged.
Local talent will include Dead Sons, Silent Gestures, Dave Burland, James Worton, and Jake Woodhams, who won a Shindig competition night to be the opening act on Saturday.
Organiser Jim Garside, of 1st Horizon Entertainment, said: “We have more than 15 bands and artists performing an eclectic mix of indie, rock, folk and roots over a three day programme set in an idyllic woodland setting.
“We’ve not run the festival since 2004 due to work commitments elsewhere but we are back due to popular demand - and we’re very pleased with the quality line-up we have managed to attract this year. Ticket sales are going well and we’ve got people coming from all over the country.”
The Shindig Festival was staged on the Penistone Showground eight years ago, but it has moved to the large events ground owned by Barnsley Scouts at Silverwood which has a capacity for up to 5,000 people each day.
Chart toppers Athlete of South East London have sold more than a million copies of their three hit albums. They pack out venues across the UK and have an Ivor Novello award under their belt. The Rifles come from Chingford and after the recent success of their Freedom Run album are busy touring some of the UK's biggest festivals this summer.
Ocean Colour Scene's Simon Fowler and drummer Oscar Harrison perform exclusive acoustic sets to rave reviews and always include their own renditions of all the OCS favourite numbers. Other confirmed performers include Max Raptor, the Jon Strong Band, Billy Lockett, The Violet May, One Boy Has Music and The Heartbreaks.
“We are looking forward to great event which will have something for everyone. This will be the first of many Shindig Festivals now as we definitely plan to turn the event into an annual date in the burgeoning UK festival calendar,” said Jim.
The Shindig Festival will be held August 10 – 12 and crowds will enjoy indie and alternative rock on Friday and Saturday, and acoustic, folk & roots on the Sunday.
Headline acts are The Rifles on Friday (tickets £20), Athlete on Saturday (tickets £25), and Simon and Oscar from Ocean Colour Scene on Sunday (tickets £25). Entry to all three dates costs £55. Tickets are available in advance only via www.shindigfestival.co.uk
