Over the past 20 years Penistone-based artist and sculptor, James Milner, has created a unique sculpture garden around his 19th century cottage, which acts as a stunning backdrop for his work. James' sculptures are crafted in stone and are inspired by elemental shapes in nature such as sand dunes and snow drifts, plus the his love of mathematics and geometry. James asked us to help raise his profile and generate more commissions for his sculptures.
Our client requested one release, rather than an ongoing PR campaign, so we had to make it count. Going with the human interest angle, we hung the story on the fact that James had once been a shepherd and was completely self-taught as a stone sculptor– or as one paper put it he had moved ‘from flock to rock’. The quality of the work speaks for itself and we knew that by offering a range of good quality photographs we could almost definitely attract coverage in the press. We also targeted broadcast media and lifestyle, interior and garden magazines.
We gained extensive coverage for James with page leads in publications such as the Yorkshire Post, Barnsley Chronicle, Sheffield Star and Huddersfield Examiner, plus a double-page, full-colour spread in Yorkshire Life magazine. BBC Radio Sheffield interviewed James in his garden and BBC Look North also filmed there, producing an attractive feature on their evening news programme. Following the media attention, James reported he had received several phone call enquiries, a rush of new visitors to his garden and a steep incease in sales and commissions.
