Kate Betts

Kate Betts is a former BBC journalist who swapped sides and set up Capital B Media in 2006 to help people deal with the media.
She uses her knowledge of working on both sides of the camera to help clients navigate media interviews and to advise the C-suite in organisations across the UK and beyond.
Clients she has advised or trained include Social Work England, the Care Quality Commission, the Pensions Regulator, Michelin Tyres, the National Lottery Community Fund, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, the Science Museum Group, International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, ShelterBox international relief charity, StepChange debt charity, numerous bluelight services, local authorities and NHS trusts.
Behind the scenes she has drafted, reviewed and tested crisis communications plans for national clients; advised on how to deal with high-profile negative cases including Serious Case Reviews and prosecutions, and prominent national stories like the Hillsborough Inquest and the Alexis Jay Report.
Kate is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and one of their associate trainers, running courses in media interview skills, crisis communications and writing for PR. She was also an associate at the Cabinet Office Emergency Planning College, where she ran courses on communicating in a crisis or emergency for national and international clients.
She works closely with Rob Walley and his team at Controlled Events, helping large organisations test their crisis and emergency planning.
Kate spent five years teaching journalism at the University of Sheffield, including teaching trainee reporters how to carry out interviews.
While at the BBC she worked in radio and TV. She was also a reporter for commercial TV and worked in newspapers for several years.
