Meet The Team

Kate Betts

Kate is the director of Capital B Media. She is a former journalist, who now specialises in crisis media management. She is an associate trainer at the Cabinet Office-approved Emergency Planning College and for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. Her journalistic experience includes working in newspapers, for the BBC and for commercial television. Kate is a BBC-trained video-journalist and has made features for BBC Radio 4. She has also taught print and broadcast journalism at the University of Sheffield.

Mary Ferguson

Mary is a senior account manager with Capital B Media and is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).  She has 13 years of experience and has held various in-house PR, marketing and communications positions within businesses and charities across the UK. Mary has a degree in media studies with professional writing and began her career as a magazine journalist. She manages our key accounts and specialises in helping our charity clients achieve their communications objectives. 


Charlotte Goldthorpe

Charlotte is an account manager at Capital B Media working across a number of key accounts. She has five years' experience in PR, social media and communications, having worked both in-house and in agency roles. Charlotte holds a BA Hons degree in journalism and is an accredited PR practitioner of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).

Chris Coates

Chris is an account executive at Capital B Media. He holds BA and Masters degrees in journalism from the University of Sheffield, where he trained in newswriting, broadcast and online communications. He also achieved a Diploma in Journalism from the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) in 2016. He is responsible for monitoring all of our clients' coverage both in print and online, proof reading and distributing press releases.

John Smith

John is an experienced graphic designer and branding expert and is an associate of Capital B Media, handily sharing the same office building. John has 30 years of experience working with a long list of brands and supports us with magazine, online,  direct mail, and general design services. 

Michelle Rawlins

Michelle is an award winning freelance journalist and an associate of Capital B Media. She has worked as a local and national newspaper and magazine writer and regularly supplies content including real-life features for a range of media platforms. Michelle brokers national print and broadcast media coverage and also supports Capital B Media with copywriting. 

Steph Pollard

Steph is an associate of Capital B Media. She writes releases, features and web copy and provides specialist support in PR planning and strategic communications. Steph has experience working as a regional journalist and a public/media relations manager for the Department of Health and local government. She is a champion of effective communication with all stakeholders, to help clients achieve and maintain excellent public relations.

Antony Oxley

Cameraman and photographer Antony is an associate at Capital B Media. He has worked for Yorkshire Television and Sky News, covering major stories ranging from floods and fires to political storms and personal tragedies. His assignments included the Soham murders, the Selby train crash and the Harold Shipman case. He also covers football matches for Sky Sports and BBC Sport. As well as helping with media training, he works as a stills photographer for Capital B Media.

Mary Murtagh

Mary is an associate at Capital B Media, assisting and running media training and PR for SME courses. She is an award-winning print and video journalist who spent 12 years working for some of the biggest regional papers in the UK. She has trained everyone from housing officers and executives of blue-chip companies to senior council officers and firefighters.

Deborah Wain

Deborah is an associate writer at Capital B Media, specialising in health stories and web copy. She is an experienced and award-winning journalist and script writer. She writes for stage and television, including as a scriptwriter for Hollyoaks, and has had several plays broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Deborah is a past winner of the Paul Foot Award for investigative journalism run by Private Eye and the Guardian

Ben Rooth

Ben is an associate media trainer at Capital B Media. He is an award-winning journalist, who has worked across TV, print and radio, including at the BBC. He has interviewed everyone from prime ministers and CEOs to David Attenborough and Alan Whicker. As a media trainer he has trained chief executives of major international companies and senior Whitehall policymakers.
