For more information, please visit A Barnsley business support programme aimed at would-be entrepreneurs is holding an open day in Cudworth.

The SmartStart event in Cudworth follows on from the success of town centre and Penistone open days, which were attended by over 60 people.

SmartStart, run by Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre (BBIC), is for anyone interested in setting up their own business, or who has recently set up a business.

The programme has helped more than 200 new businesses set up in the last three years. It provides one-to-one business mentoring plus a series of workshops over a four-week period, covering all aspects of running a business, including business planning, finance, marketing and sales.

SmartStart open days will be held at BBIC in Cudworth on November 10th and will run from 9:30am to 4pm. Would-be business owners can just drop-in on the day or get in touch and book a one-hour appointment with a business mentor in advance.

Andrew Painten, owner of Fluent Films, who has gained business support through BBIC, said: “The support you receive is absolutely fantastic, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. They give you all the necessary information you need to set-up a business, and are always there for you if you hit a rough patch.”

Fluent Films specialises in creating high-quality corporate videos for a variety of companies and is celebrating three years in business.

In the last three years, SmartStart business advisers have seen more than 600 people at open day. Of these, 340 potential start-ups have found out more about the realities of being their own boss though SmartStart’s business support programme, including expert workshops and one-to-one surgeries. With the benefit of this support, 204 businesses have started trading.

Successful Barnsley business start-ups who have benefitted from SmartStart include a first-aid skills training agency, a packaging consultancy, a family support company and a courier company.

BBIC’s SmartStart business development manager, Sarah Valentine, said: “Following on from the success of our town centre and Penistone roadshows, we thought we’d take ourselves to Cudworth. We’re always really excited to see the sort of business ideas that people have, and we would encourage anyone from just a small business idea, to a recently set-up business to come along and have a chat.”

Please visit or call 01226 249590 to find out more or book an appointment at any of the above open day events.

The SmartStart programme is managed by the BBIC working in partnership with Barnsley Council and is part of a wider strategy to help grow the local economy, as set out in Barnsley Council’s Jobs and Business Plan 2014-2017.
