Barnsley company hits 100

12 July 2011

A Barnsley marketing company’s unusual profile has proved a successful formula, winning more than 100 clients in its first year.
Three directors of small companies formerly based at Barnsley’s Digital Media Centre, and of different backgrounds and generations, decided to combine their individual skills and experience by forming DM2 Creative.
The approach is yielding results for a diverse range of companies in Barnsley and outside the area, from sole traders to multi-nationals.
DM2, now running from Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre, at Wilthorpe, cleverly takes its name from its founders Don Gent, 63, Marc Wilmot, 47, and Mark Asquith, 29.
Don, director of, specialises in branding, marketing strategy and print management, Mark, who runs The Design Loft, has expertise in web and digital marketing, while Marc’s background is as a graphic designer, photographer and videographer.
The trio say their core values brought them together – the desire to contribute ideas to boost a company’s growth rather than just meeting a marketing brief.
Mark said: “We effectively span three generations and have more than 70 years’ experience between us. Our mix of ages and specialisms gives us a unique approach that combines the best of traditional marketing with cutting edge, onlineand digital techniques.
“It wouldn’t be unusual to find a larger team of peopledoing what three of us do which gives us a competitive edge. We bring the same attention to detail to all our clients, whatever their size, and are strongly focused on measurable results.
“We quickly realised that the three of us working together can do a better job and the success of the collaboration has been phenomenal in a relatively short space of time.”
DM2’s most popular services include web design, search engine optimisation, photography, printing, web usability audits and social media and digital marketing strategies.
Its Barnsley-based clients include Cannon Hall Farm, Japanese food specialists SushiSushi, UK Water Features, solar panel manufacturers Solar Europa and Sash UK, which designs and manufacturers PVCu products.   It has also undertaken projects for UK-based companies with a global presence such as screen manufacturer Pro Display and biofuel and oils business the Biocorp Group.
DM2 has launched a start-up package for small businesses called ‘Grass Roots’. For a one-off fee, it provides complete promotional material to get going, including a bespoke, editable website, business cards, flyers and two months’ free IT support, along with marketing advice.
Mark commented: “A lot of people have come to us saying they’ve been ripped off when setting up a website and, when you’re starting out, money is tight. Most design companies want to shoe-horn start-ups into a solution that fits the designers whereas we work around the needs of the business. Our package is entirely bespoke with the option of upgrading as the business develops, if that is what’s required.”
DM2 has received support with planning its own development from the Enterprising Barnsley programme and its directors also act as business coaches for Enterprising Barnsley.
Enterprising Barnsley offers business support to Barnsley businesses with growth potential and has helped create over 500 jobs. It has attracted £2.89m investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.
The team has recently taken on another developer Jason Scarfe and wants to hear from other talented designers and developers looking for work as it expands further.
Mark said Barnsley’s creative industry sector is fast developing with support from Enterprising Barnsley.
“There was a time when you had to look to the region’s big cities for a creative network but now people from outside are starting to look to Barnsley for that buzz. It really is a great place to grow your business.”
