Barnsley solicitors urge bosses to keep staff safe in the dark

Businesses are being reminded to keep their staff and customers safe as the clocks go back and the nights draw in.
The warning comes from Barnsley solicitors Raleys who said this weekend’s clock change should be a wake-up call to business owners and managers.
“Something as simple as forgetting to switch on outside lights when it suddenly becomes dark at home-time could land you in trouble,” said accident at work specialist solicitor, Greg Price.
“Businesses have a duty of care to their employees, but are also responsible for visitors to their premises. So now is the time to do a quick audit of any issues that may arise because of darkness.
“Is your car park well lit for example? And are there steps outside your entrance that could be hazardous in the dark?
“These might seem like little issues, but not sorting them out could lead to injury and even claims against the business.”
By law, employers have a duty to ensure their health, safety and wellbeing of staff. The UK’s 6.8 million lone workers, such as security staff, postal workers, shop workers, delivery drivers, social workers and district nurses, are particularly vulnerable to accidents in the dark.
“Being concerned about the well-being of your staff isn’t just a legal duty – there’s a clear business case too,” said Greg.
“It’s about creating better working environments, building trust and respect and this can help improve staff retention and boost productivity. The flipside could be staff being off work because of injury and claims against you as an employer.”
