Barnsley start-up courier company shows first signs of success
23 September 2015
A start-up Barnsley courier company that can deliver anything from a solicitor’s letter to heavyweight pieces of engineering equipment is showing the first signs of success.
Elite Logistics, which was set-up by lifelong friends Tim Beswick and Martin Lever, has posted a profit at the start of its second year in trading, having set-up 15 months ago.
The company guarantees that they can pick up an item within an hour of the order being placed, and has thousands of courier drivers on hand to transport the item anywhere in the country.
Tim, managing director, said: “We’ve delivered packages for a whole host of people, including solicitors, accountants, manufacturers and printers. Recently, we received an order to deliver four bags of grit-salt from Worksop to Gloucestershire. The orders that we receive are varied, and keep us on our toes.
“We pride ourselves on never turning down a job. We are there for those emergency situations, when you need to get something to the other side of the country before the close of the working day.
“We’ve worked really hard to build a customer base and turnover has increased steadily in our first year of trading. We’re now thrilled to turn a profit at the start of our second year and will use this as a platform for further growth.”
Elite Logistics was helped to set up business through the Barnsley business start-up programme – SmartStart and then assisted for the next 12 months through the business support programme at BBIC.
Tim, aged 29, said: “We haven’t got a bad word to say about the support we’ve received from SmartStart and Genesis. They’ve given us everything that we needed and told us from the beginning that we had a great business idea and helped us to develop that idea into a fully-functioning business.
“The business model that we have now is completely different to the one that we had back when we first started, and that’s all down to the help and support that we’ve received from the programme.”
Elite have re-launched their website, with targeted SEO so that they are seen as emergency couriers in 350 towns and cities across the UK.
The company’s business model is when placing an order; the customer has to specify the weight and dimensions of the item, when it needs to be delivered by, and a general description of the goods. Their system then generates a price, and if they are happy to pay, a courier can be ready to pick up the item within the hour.
Elite can deliver any item up to the size of 1.5 tonnes and have courier drivers who drive motorbikes, Luton Box vans and anything in-between.
Tim and Martin have worked for a combined 15 years in the logistics industry before setting up their own company. Tim worked as a freelance courier and Martin worked in deliveries.
BBIC business development manager Sarah Valentine-Bull said: “Tim and Martin had a great idea and they’ve implemented it brilliantly and now they’re really beginning to see their business take off. It’s great to see that they’ve recently posted a profit, and the sky is the limit from here on.”
The SmartStart and Genesis programmes are part of a wider strategy to help grow the local economy, as set out in Barnsley Council’s Jobs and Business Plan 2014-2017.
