Barnsley's unique link to digital event
16 May 2011
Barnsley will be linking up live to the latest thinking by the world’s top experts across the worlds of technology, digital media and innovation at one of the biggest new media events held outside London.
Enterprising Barnsley and the Digital Media Centre (DMC) have teamed up to arrange a unique “fringe” conference with live streams from the Thinking Digital Conference at the Sage in Gateshead. And it will be a two-way link as participants in Barnsley will stream back parts of their event to Gateshead thanks to a camera crew on site at the DMC.
The conference in the north east from May 24 to 26 brings together what the organisers claim are some of the world’s most innovative ideas, technologies and people to talk about all things digital. The speakers include experts from the BBC, Microsoft and American IT giant Cisco.
The link up means canny Barnsley business people can benefit from the conference without the hassle of travelling - and at a fraction of the cost. The main conference costs £299 upwards, but tickets for the Barnsley version at the DMC, on County Way, which also runs from May 24 to 26, will start at just £20.
Tracey Johnson, Creative and Digital Industries specialist for Enterprising Barnsley, said it was the first – and only - such fringe conference in the country.
“We’re really excited to be producing the Thinking Digital – Barnsley Fringe event. We're setting up our own “Livecast Lounge” where people will be able to enjoy live streamed broadcasts of speakers at the conference in the north east. And we will also be having an input by linking back to them,” she said.
“But we are mixing it up with some of our own ingredients as well and with our own speakers just for participants here in Barnsley. And there will also be plenty of opportunities to network, chat and share ideas for all things digital.
“This really is a unique opportunity for anyone involved in digital media, science, art or music to enjoy the Thinking Digital Conference with a Yorkshire twist.”
Herb Kim, the founder & director of the Thinking Digital Conference, was recently recognised by Wired Magazine as one of the top 100 most influential figures in the UK new media world.
He said, “We’re a conference about technology and innovation so we’re hugely excited to be working with Enterprising Barnsley in using technology in an innovative way. The Thinking Digital – Barnsley Fringe concept was entirely their idea and I can’t thank them enough in helping spread the concentration of inspiration, ideas and insight that we bring together in Gateshead and make sure it can be of great use in Barnsley.”
The Enterprising Barnsley programme offers business support to Barnsley businesses with growth potential and has helped create more than 500 jobs. Enterprising Barnsley has attracted £2.89m investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.
