Call for more donations to Barnsley Hospice charity shops
9 April 2013
Barnsley Hospice is appealing for more furniture to be given to its charity shops after seeing a fall in donations which it’s believed may be due to the recession.
The hospice has two specialist furniture shops, at Stairfoot, and Blucher Street in the town centre, which last year raised just under £200,000.
There are seven other general charity shops. Last year the total brought in by all nine shops was around £955,000. The hospice at Gawber, has to raise £2 million annually in addition to its £1.6m NHS grant.
Retail and fundraising manager Dawn Charlesworth said people were still donating furniture, but in smaller quantities.
“Instead of getting a whole room of furniture we are just getting one or two items, such as a sofa and a coffee table.
“It could well be that they simply can’t afford to replace any more items and, in these difficult times, we do understand that,” said Dawn.
“But we also need to remind people that we do take all sorts of furniture and bric-a-brac. We can take anything from a dinner service to a garden swing and it is better to recycle it than send it to landfill.”
Items can be donated at the shops on Monday to Saturday, between 9am and 4pm, or the hospice can pick up furniture and carry out house clearances. For more information contact 01226 249744 or go to www.barnsleyhospice.org
The seven general shops, which sell clothes, bric-a-brac, household goods and books, are in The Arcade and Eldon Street, in Barnsley town centre, and at Wombwell, Mexborough, Goldthorpe, Mapplewell and Penistone
In addition to the shops, the hospice receives income from donations, legacies and fund-raising, and relies on the work of hundreds of volunteers.
Barnsley Hospice provides inpatient and day care for anyone in Barnsley with a life-limiting condition. It also offers care in patients’ own homes as well as a range of other services. Services are free to people living in Barnsley.
