Massive toyfair comes to Doncaster
17 July 2012
Thousands of toys old and new will be on show on Sunday (July 22nd) at a toyfair at Doncaster Racecourse.
The fair, the biggest in Yorkshire and the third biggest in the country, will feature about 350 stalls, with toys and models that range in price from 50p to hundreds of pounds.
Traders from as far afield as Scotland, Wales and London sell everything from favourites Corgi and Hornby, dolls and teddy bears, tinplate toys and lead soldiers from the 1920s right through to the latest new releases.
Organiser Michael Bishop, who is 65 and from Driffield, started running MB Toyfairs at Doncaster five years ago. But his interest goes back to when he left school at 16 and went to work on the toy stall at Selby market.
He later worked as a trainee manager at Woolworths in Scarborough, with responsibility for the toy department, and then spent a long time in the antique trade, while always keeping an eye on the ever-expanding toy trade. He ran toy auctions for several years, before taking over the toyfairs in 2007.
“The toyfairs are a great day out for families as well as collectors,” said Michael.
“There are old toy cars, trucks, boats, planes and dolls for the mums and dads, and Thomas the Tank Engine, Lego and bargains for the children. The toyfairs are like a treasure trove, because you never know what is going to turn up. With so many traders coming there could be some real rarities.”
The toyfair at Doncaster Racecourse on Sunday 22nd runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm. The cost is £3.50 per adult, £2.50 for concessions, children (under-16) £1 and under-5s free. There is free parking at the racecourse for 500 cars.
