May the force be with you at Doncaster toyfair

27 August 2012

Visitors to Yorkshire’s biggest toyfair will have the chance to meet some of their favourite Star Wars heroes and villains.

Storm Troopers, Jedis and Galactic Marines will be among the characters at the toyfair at Doncaster Racecourse on Sunday (September 2nd).

The “good” Star Wars characters will be played by members of the Star Wars costume club Rebel Legion, with UK Garrison playing the baddies.

Rebel Legion was set up in 2000 in the US and now has about 2,000 members in 28 countries and is supported by Lucasfilm Ltd. Its UK arm fundraises for charity and its main partner is the Rainbow Trust, which supports families of children with a life-threatening illness.

The characters will join traders from as far afield as Scotland, Wales and London at what is the third biggest toyfair in the country. Altogether there will be nearly a quarter of a million items for sale on about 360 stalls, including tinplate toys and lead soldiers from the 1920s, models from favourites Corgi and Hornby, dolls, teddy bears and Lego, right through to the latest new releases.

The event is organised by Michael Bishop, of Driffield, who has been involved in buying and selling toys for nearly half a century. Michael, who is 65, started running MB Toyfairs at Doncaster five years ago. But his interest goes back to when he left school at 16 and went to work on the toy stall at Selby market.

Michael said: “We get many Star Wars fans at our toyfairs and always have a lot of Star Wars memorabilia for sale. So having some of the popular characters there will be an added bonus and it will add to the atmosphere of what is a great day out for all the family.

“It is also a great day out for collectors as we have so many traders and so many toys that you never quite know what is going to turn up and there are always a few rarities.”

The toyfair at Doncaster Racecourse on Sunday 2nd runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm. The cost is £3.50 per adult, £2.50 for concessions, children (under-16) £1 and under-5s free. There is free parking at the racecourse for 500 cars.
