Barnsley Hospice invites people to light up a life
6 November 2018
Barnsley Hospice is inviting people to dedicate a light in memory of a loved one or in honour of a friend or relative at one of three special services.
The Light Up a Life services will be held at the hospice and at St Mary’s Church in December, with the lights hung on Christmas trees at the two locations and the names recorded in a Book of Blessings. The lights will shine until the Twelfth Night.
Bev Hewitt, in-patient unit manager at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Light up a Life is a poignant and beautiful way to honour and celebrate the life of a loved one and we know that it offers comfort to a lot of families.
“There’s something incredibly special about the moment that the tree lights up; it’s really quite magnificent and means a lot to everyone who attends.”
There will be two religious services held at St Mary's Church, Barnsley, on Sunday December 2 at 3.30pm and 7.00pm. There will also be a non-religious service at Barnsley Hospice on Thursday December 6 at 7.00pm.
Last year Light Up a Life raised more than £26,000, with more than 750 lights on the Christmas trees. This year the appeal is sponsored by Dodworth-based Booker Commercial estate agency, and for the first time, the Book of Blessings will be available to view online.
Barnsley Hospice has to raise £2.2m a year, on top of the £1.6m it gets from the NHS. It is based in Gawber and provides specialist care for anyone in Barnsley with a life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease.
To dedicate a light in memory or celebration of a loved one, or attend a service, call the fundraising team on 01226 323627, email email@example.com or book online here.
