Business support programme helps bring more than 1,000 jobs to Barnsley

A business support programme has helped bring more than a thousand jobs to Barnsley since the start of 2017.
Enterprising Barnsley, the business development arm of Barnsley Council, helped existing firms create 956 jobs, and brought a further 200 to the borough by encouraging firms to relocate.
Paul Clifford, head of economic development at Barnsley Council, said: “The public sector working in partnership with the private sector really does help to drive good growth and lead to a better economy for everyone.
“These figures show that with the right support provided at the right time businesses can go from strength to strength even in an uncertain climate.”
Since the start of the year Enterprising Barnsley has supported 187 existing companies to expand, supported 84 new businesses to set up and attracted 35 businesses to the borough.
Among the businesses enticed to relocate are Esco and the Environment Agency who have taken units at R-evolution @ Gateway 36, a mixed-used development at junction 36 of the M1. And RDS Global has moved in to the Digital Media Centre in the town centre.
Phil Harvey, managing director at RDS Global, said: “The team at Enterprising Barnsley has gone above and beyond for us with a detailed support programme.
“We were really wowed by the Digital Media Centre – not only by the fantastic building, but the culture, people, networking opportunities and business support is impressive.”
The businesses helped to expand include Balmoral Tanks, which has invested more than £10m in a new manufacturing plant in Thurnscoe.
