Japanese food expert backs healthy eating in January
3 January 2017
A modern cuisine expert is urging people to turn to Japanese food to help with their New Year resolutions.
Stuart Turner, who runs Japanese food distributor SushiSushi and is an expert in modern international cuisine, says adding a Japanese twist to healthy food can make it more enjoyable.
He said: “A lot of people are thinking about eating more healthily in January, but can be put off because healthy food can be a bit dull. But it can be tasty and good for you too.
“For example you can add miso to brighten up soups or fresh fish, and soy sauce to salads, vegetables and tofu. You can elevate the flavour of food that might be rather uninteresting by just turning it a bit Japanese.
“Eating less and eating better is one of the top New Year resolutions, but it is also one of the top ones to break. One of the main reasons for breaking it is that it is just too hard. But I believe that just adding a bit more flavour to food it is so much easier to keep.”
Only about 3.5 per cent of Japanese people are classed as obese, compared with about 27 per cent of British adults. This is because, as well as eating a more healthy diet, the Japanese tend to eat smaller portions, said Stuart.
“We really can learn a lot from the way they eat. And we also have to remember that eating less and eating well doesn’t just help you lose weight, it also means you will probably live longer. Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, and that is mainly put down to their diet.”
