Scaffolding gift will save hospice hundreds

A gift of two scaffolding towers is set to save Barnsley Hospice hundreds of pounds in future maintenance costs.
Following an appeal for help, industrial services company Hertel UK have donated a pair of ‘Razor Decks’ scaffolding towers - which normally cost around £1000 each to purchase new. The gift will save the charity from paying to rent equipment each time it needs to reach an elevated position to carry out work on the hospice building.
Mick Thomas, head of maintenance at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Every time we need to get up high we have to pay to rent scaffolding, and it was all starting to add up. We issued an appeal via Facebook for someone to help and Alf Levitt, an employee at the Hertel UK site at Drax Power Station, came forward. He spoke to his manager Maurice Wilson and they agreed to make this extremely generous gift, which we are all really grateful for.
“Alf, Maurice and the Hertel UK team are our knights in shining armour. The towers are perfect for what we need and will help us save on any future hiring costs over many years to come.”
Alf Levitt, project coordinator at Hertel UK, added: “Barnsley Hospice does an amazing job of supporting people in need, so we jumped at the chance to help them in return. We’re delighted to have been able to make a difference to such a good cause.”
As well as gifts, donations from the Barnsley business community help the hospice raise the £2.2m it needs each year to care for patients and their families. A further £1.6m is provided by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Barnsley Hospice is based in Gawber and provides specialist care for anyone in Barnsley with a life-limiting illness. It has ten beds for inpatient care and provides day care at the on-site Limes Support and Therapy Centre.
