Special event celebrates achievements of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership

A special event will be held in Elsecar this week to celebrate the achievements of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP).
The DVLP is hosting a celebration event at the Ironworks at Elsecar Heritage Centre on Thursday 6 June. Four exhibition pods will showcase their work and there will be a pie and peas supper.
The DVLP is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and has been running since June 2014. The programme comes to an end in June this year.
Entertainment will be provided by Barnsley musician and artist Ray Hearne, with contributions from poet Ian McMillan and Barnsley poet laureate Eloise Unerman.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Area Director for the North, David Renwick will be attending. He said: “It’s been fantastic to witness the progress and successes of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership over the past five years. Without National Lottery players the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership would not have made such a positive impact on the natural heritage of the area whilst also providing opportunities for its communities, and I hope that some of those players will now reap the benefits of the scheme’s projects.
“The National Lottery Heritage Fund has committed to focusing on nature and landscapes as one of our top priorities for the next five years, and successful schemes like this provide a wealth of learning for the sector to ensure our natural heritage continues to flourish.”
Since the DVLP began in 2014, 1,800 young people have benefited from environmental, wildlife and heritage programmes. The partnership has awarded £50,000 in grants to 25 different heritage projects or groups. This has included awarding Barnsley Men’s Shed with a cash injection of £2,000 in October 2016, a project which helps to reduce loneliness among men over 35.
Its landmark projects have included commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Oaks Colliery Disaster; celebrating the 50th anniversary of A Kestrel for A Knave; and launching the Art of the Dearne project in August 2018, which culminated in a series of artworks across the Dearne Valley by four Barnsley artists.
Some of the DVLP’s other achievements include upgrading 3,130 metres of pathways; sowing seeds across 13,750 sq. metres of new grass verges; installing 83 signposts, and protecting and restoring four buildings.
