Things you should know before starting a podcast
Posted by Chris Doyle on 19th February 2020
Podcasts have gained in popularity in recent years, which is largely down to their format which fits into our busy lives.
Podcasts are a digital audio file available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device. Typically, they are available as a series, with new instalments received by subscribers, but they can also be downloaded on the go too.
If there’s a topic you’re interested in such as news, politics or comedy, there’ll probably be a podcast for it.
And for organisations, podcasts present a fantastic opportunity to connect with your stakeholders and customers.
Here are some tips to help you get started…
Invest in a microphone
First up, you’ll need a recording device. We’d recommend buying a microphone, such as the Sudotack, which retails at around £50, to ensure your podcast has good sound quality. Alternatively, you can record one using your mobile phone.
Think carefully about your topic
Before you get started, you’ll need to think of a topic relating to your organisation that will be interesting to your audience.
Perhaps you run a charity and want to talk to your supporters about the valuable work you’re doing, or a financial advisor who can give advice on money issues. Whatever topic you choose, you’ll need to make sure it has legs so you’re able to share regular content.
Choose a hosting platform
When you’ve recorded your podcast, you’ll need somewhere to host it. We recommend using the Anchor app which will upload and share it for free to platforms such as Spotify, iTunes and many more. An added feature of the Anchor app is it has handy editing features to guide you.
Make notes but don’t script it
Podcasts don’t need to be scripted, but it might help to have some notes to keep you on track.
Remember podcasts give you a platform to showcase your organisation’s personality and the people behind the scenes. It’s a way for people to get to know you and what makes you tick. It’s all about conversation, so if you can, try to have two people engaged in conversation which will keep it interesting.
