My first month at Capital B Media
Posted by Chris Doyle on 4th March 2019
Our latest recruit Chris Doyle joined us in January as junior digital account executive. Here he gives his thoughts on his first month.
This blog post isn’t just about my first month at Capital B Media, it's about my first month in the world of work, after graduating from a Masters degree in documentary journalism.
My first day
On 7th January I cycled into work for my first day as Capital B’s new junior digital account executive. The morning starts with a meeting where I find out more about the business.
Our director Kate Betts takes me for a tour around the beautiful building and goes through what she has planned for my first week. Kate is very approachable and has made the transition into the working world very smooth.
The past month
Over the past month I have learnt so much; how a company operates, how to create social media content, and that if you are a ‘dee daa’ it means you are from Sheffield. (Thanks to Steve at Barnsley Hospice for this one!)
My commute might sound daunting, but it isn’t too bad. I live in Sheffield in a village called Totley. It’s 20 miles from the office which means my day starts at 6am. A short cycle to the station and two trains later I pull into Penistone where I begin the most amazing cycle to work. I’m lucky to experience the true outdoors on my commute.
Spending time with our account managers has introduced to me to our clients such as PHA UK, Barnsley Hospice and In Good Company. The first month has flown by with plenty of filming for the hospice, including an interview with Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region. I love filming and editing and I’ve enjoyed getting to grips with new equipment and editing graphics for our clients.
The team
The team are friendly which means I’m confident to put forward my ideas. But most importantly they’ve answered any questions I may have.
Account executive Chris Coates has helped to show me the ropes. We don’t just share the same name (spookily even our girlfriends have the same name too!) but we have lots in common too. He’s shown me how to carry out media monitoring, upload content onto our website and style guides for our clients. Luckily for me he drives into Sheffield on Fridays and can give me a lift, meaning I can catch the earlier train back to Totley. This is a good opportunity for me to ask him any questions I might have, but mostly we talk about football.
I have been working with our account manager Charlotte on a video to launch Barnsley Hospice’s 25th anniversary. It has been interesting and beneficial to watch her professional approach to client projects.
My friend recently told me he hadn’t left the office for work in a while. Well, in my second week I travelled to London with our senior account manager Mary for a filming project with PHA UK. I was able to watch Mary’s approach to interviewing people with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and how she manages video projects. I enjoyed filming and editing such a thought-provoking story.
My first month at Capital B Media has been brilliant. Everyone in the team is professional and passionate. It’s been the perfect way to start my working life.
